Binding
Binding is the step where a quoted submission becomes a policy. When the insured accepts the quote and you're ready to commit coverage, you request a bind.
Requesting a bind
From the Submission Detail page of a quoted submission, click the Request Bind button. A confirmation dialog shows:
- Insured name
- Line of business
- Gross premium
- Space for optional notes
Click Confirm to submit the bind request.
What happens next
When you request a bind, the system:
- Creates a new policy record with a policy number
- Checks your binding authority against the premium
- Routes to the appropriate approval workflow
The bind result returns:
- Policy ID and policy number — Assigned immediately
- Approval ID — If approval is required
- Workflow ID — For tracking the approval process
Approval workflow
Not all binds require approval. The system checks your authority level against the risk:
| Authority level | Who can approve |
|---|---|
| Auto | No approval needed — bind is instant |
| Underwriter | Any underwriter with standard authority |
| Senior underwriter | Requires senior underwriter sign-off |
| Chief underwriter | Executive-level approval required |
Viewing pending approvals
Navigate to the Approvals page to see all pending approvals. Each approval shows:
- Approval type (bind, referral, reserve change, etc.)
- Entity details (insured, LOB, premium)
- Time elapsed since request
- Who requested it
Approving or rejecting
If you have the authority to approve:
- Open the approval from the Approvals page
- Review the details in the Approval Gate panel
- Add approval notes (recommended for audit trail)
- Click Approve to proceed or Reject to send back
TIP
Even if you have authority to approve your own binds, having a second set of eyes on larger risks is good practice. The activity timeline records who approved what.
Binder preview
Before finalizing, you can preview the binder document:
- Click Preview Binder on the Submission Detail page
- The system generates an HTML preview of the binder
- Review coverage terms, conditions, and endorsements
- The binder can be sent to the insured for signature
The binder serves as interim proof of coverage until the full policy packet is assembled.
After binding
Once the bind is approved:
- The submission status changes to Bound
- The policy record is active
- You can proceed to issue the policy — selecting forms, assembling the packet, finalizing, and sending via email
The Bind Status Timeline on the submission detail page shows visual progress through the lifecycle stages: Received → Rated → Quoted → Bound → Issued.
